- Abstract
With the help of the memory of the struggle between patricians and plebeians the role of historical consciousness in the conflicts of the late Roman Republic can be explored in an exemplary manner. The first part of this article examines the representation of the first and second secessio plebis. It can be shown that the original oral tradition is preserved in a small stock of motifs classés. Subsequently, I go on to ask whether there were elements of a specific popular historical tradition, or whether a genuinely plebeian tradition of early Roman history is conceivable.
