- Abstract
The article focuses on abdominal pain and malabsorption due to tissue deposition of clofazimine crystals. It is unusual for drugs to produce symptoms as a result of crystal deposition in tissues. The authors describe here a syndrome of abdominal pain and malabsorption due to widespread intra-abdominal deposition of the anti-leprosy drug clofazimine which, in this case, ultimately proved fatal, despite stopping the drug. The benign and acceptable side effects of clofazimine are well recognized amongst leprologists. But in addition it is becoming evident that gastro-intestinal symptoms may be not only very severe, but that due to tissue deposition of crystals they can be irreversible and life threatening.
