- Abstract
In Europe, the concept of social responsibility of corporations, in particular its philanthropic dimension, is not as well established as in the USA. However, due to strict budget restrictions imposed in recent years, the EU member states have taken steps to support and ensure the vitality of the non-profit private sector (third sector). As a result, it is of fundamental importance to understand the mechanisms that motivate corporate charitable giving as it has a key role in supporting the third sector. Managers individual preferences influence the philanthropic activity of the company, keeping it away from maximizing profit. However, the literature review and the reconfiguration of conceptual connections suggest that the search for personal and business legitimacy, in an institutional framework is a proper explanation for awarding donations. The proposed theoretical model illustrates that the quest for legitimacy produces positive effects on the company and puts in convergence the interests of both agents and principals.
