- Abstract
Building athletic performance is a process that involves, apart from athletes and coaches, a vast number of specialists from many related fields - the behind-the-scenes people. We do not propose to establish the ratio by which these unseen participants contribute to the overall performance of the athlete, nor to build a hierarchy of these unseen contributors, or to maximize or minimize their part. What we wish to accomplish is to shed some light on one aspect which has resulted from our Sports Medicine practice. Over the last 9 years, we have had a constant preoccupation for identifying the traits of the human personality which could help and / or lead towards performance (in general) and particularly towards athletic performance. Coaching is a branch born out of psychology, which uses specific question-building techniques in order to: -- accompany the client / patient / athlete in the process of establishing objectives -- identify the paths and means for achieving the objectives -- identify the elements that can cause blockage on the road to athletic / intellectual performance -- find external and internal resources to help them advance in the desired direction -- help establish the steps they can take in order to achieve their goals In this article we will present 5 steps / important elements that can help build self-confidence. The results come from applying methodically the techniques borrowed from coaching, and following them over the span of 9 years. Attaining the desired level of self-confidence depends on the specificity of the chosen objective, on obtaining a clear explanation of the chosen objective from the part of the athletic coach, on identifying the possible routes for achieving that objective, on the athlete's degree of responsibility and knowledge of oneself.
