- Title
Be Seen but Not Heard, the Other Side of Tokenism: An Undergraduate Woman of Color's Perspective.
- Authors
Lawson, Shavaughn M.
- Abstract
This article details my personal experiences as an undergraduate female student of color at a predominately white institution in the Midwest, who holds multiple leadership positions on campus. I regularly interact with white students, faculty, and staff on campus. This auto ethnography makes a unique threefold contribution: first, an auto ethnographic, undergraduate student voice is rare in academic literature; second, I focus specifically on my experiences in the realm of leadership, rather than adjusting to college; third, I call attention to the intersectional (i.e. racial and gendered) dynamics of being a black woman in multiple leadership roles. This article illuminates the lived experiences of not only me, but also many students of color, particularly blacks, as they try to secure an undergraduate degree on a predominately white campus in the classroom, at work, and during extra-curricular activities.
