- Title
The Articulation of Modern Fetishisms and Indigenous Species.
- Abstract
The article discusses commodity fetishism of the Yami indigenous people of Taiwan living on Orchid Island. The author states that Yami people have traditionally viewed various animal species as having a form of power over human beings, but with the advent of modern capitalism these species have become a sort of commodity. The author contends that this fetishism has been amplified by conservationist and resource management movements that focus on these indigenous species. The author concludes that it is through these indigenous species that the Yami experience modernity.
