- Abstract
The article titled "The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism, Volume III: Relief, Revolution, and Revival, 1746-1829" discusses the significance of the long eighteenth century for the history of British and Irish Catholicism. The period saw the enforcement of penal laws against Catholics in Britain and Ireland, as well as the growth of ideas of toleration and pragmatic imperial concerns which led to Catholic relief. The article takes a "four nations" approach, discussing England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales both independently and in terms of their overlapping influences. It explores various themes such as inter-religious conflict, anti-Catholicism, migration, and class, providing a comprehensive understanding of the social, political, and cultural landscape of British and Irish Catholicism during this period.
