- Abstract
This paper deals with the 123 copper coins of the early Kushan Soter Megas series, attributed to the first and second Kushan kings Kujula Kadphises and Wima Takto, unearthed from the various sites at Taxila, and one coin attributable to Wima Takto. The cabinet of the Taxila Museum possesses two types of Soter Megas coins; (a) bust of king/king riding on horse, (b) figure of standing Oesho/Ardochsho and one Wima Takto coin (c) figure of bull/Bactrian camel. The coins of the first type are reported in two denominations i.e. full unit (reduced Attic didrachm = 8gm) and quarter unit (reduced Attic drachm = 2gm), while the coins of the second and the third types are local copper denominations of light weight. Most of the coins are reported from proper contexts, but some coins lack such information. Accordingly, the Marshall's assemblage is associated with contextual records, but later additions, picked up from different sites or acquired from other sources, are without such evidence. The unreported coins might have been come from various excavations conducted by the Federal government, then Department of Archaeology from time to time, but unfortunately the site information of such enterprises is often missing. Besides this, some coins, which were purchased by the concerned authority or received as donations from the local people, are traceable from their tags. Nevertheless all these coins known from either various sites (Taxila) or other sources highlight the significance of the Soter Megas monetary system in this region.
