- Abstract
International Medical Graduates usually have to surmount several challenges to secure residency training position in Canada and even more so for a surgical specialty, as there are only a few spots dedicated to foreign trained doctors. The author was successful at matching to a Canadian general surgery residency training program and here they describe the journey, challenges and offer advice to assist potential applicants and other foreign trained physicians who desire to secure any of the competitive training positions. A combination of foresight, grit, networking, and the ability to tell a compelling life story will provide the would-be resident doctor a fighting chance in the race to become practicing physicians in Canada.
