- Abstract
Expansive soil causes severe damages to residential buildings and pavements which has been recognized in several parts of Saudi Arabia. This study was conducted in order to recognize the characteristic behavior of Al-Ghat expansive soil and to investigate the effectiveness of biopolymer to stabilize and reduce the swelling potential of expansive soil. Several laboratory tests were performed on treated and untreated samples including consistency limit tests, swelling oedometer tests, and unconfined compression strength tests. The results indicate that liquid limit and plasticity index values increased with an increase in the concentration of biopolymer. Also, the swelling potential of expansive soil reduced with an increase in the biopolymer concentration as the swelling potential reduced from 9.24% for untreated samples to 4.67%, 3.26%, and 0.93% for treated samples with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2%, respectively. The unconfined compressive strength values increase with the increase in the curing period and temperature and reduced with the increase in the biopolymer concentration.
