- Abstract
Purpose - In order to study efficiency of agricultural inputs of developing countries in the process of modernization and urbanization such as China, to find out a feasible way of improving inputs efficiency of agricultural production in these countries, we propose a hierarchical cluster analysis model based on DEA efficiency decomposition model to make an empirical research on inputs efficiency of agriculture with data from the Second National Agricultural Census of Jiangsu Province, China. Design/methodology/approach - According to the requirements of studying agricultural inputs efficiency, we establish a hierarchical cluster analysis model based on DEA efficiency decomposition model to make an empirical research on inputs efficiency of agriculture with data from the Second National Agricultural Census of Jiangsu Province, China, trying to obtain relevant conclusions to improve and enhance the efficiency of agricultural production inputs of China. Findings - Our empirical study indicates that "Input Congestion Effect" exists in Chinese peasant household total quantity scale while, "Efficiency Loss" exists in investment for chemical fertilizer and agricultural chemicals, and both "Input Congestion Effect" and "Efficiency Loss" exist in investment for machinery sowing seeds and the machinery harvests. Furthermore, we found that the internal motivation of the problem is the limitation of agricultural land's time and circulation. Practical implications - Our research is a kind of static research and lack of information and analysis on dimensions of time sequence due to limitations of cross section data from the Second National Agricultural Census of Jiangsu Province, China. Originality/value - We establish comprehensive efficiency evaluation model for agriculture production based on analysis framework of DEA efficiency decomposition model and hierarchical cluster analysis model to make an empirical research on inputs efficiency of agriculture of developing countries in the process of modernization and urbanization such as China. Then, we find out a feasible way of improving inputs efficiency of agricultural production.
