- Abstract
The article explores the struggle for women's rights by the indigenous women of Chiapas, Mexico. It describes the role of the Mexican government in perpetuating injustices against indigenous women by not addressing extreme poverty. It discusses how the Mexican government uses traditional indigenous customs as an instrument of oppression. The article also looks at how the women's situation started to change with the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) movement by providing opportunities for empowerment.
