- Abstract
The article reiterates some of the most significant properties of traditional silica-based ceramics and introduces some characteristics of a new synthetic quartz glass-ceramic. Silica-based ceramics are said to be the materials of choice for superior and long-lasting dental esthetics and function. However, their inherent brittleness requires strengthening through metal or high-strength ceramic substructures or resin bonding for final cementation. A new synthetic, low-fusing, quartz glass-ceramic was developed in the attempt to overcome some of the disadvantages of traditional silica-based ceramics. Two clinical applications of this new ceramic material are discussed and illustrated.
