- Abstract
In this article, I seek to understand the power relations that have been constituted from the Modelling project theme choice. The study is based on the theoretical approach of Critical Mathematics Education and on the Historical-Cultural Activity Theory. The research subjects are students of a 3rd Year Class of the Integrated Technical Course to High School in Environment, at the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais, Governador Valadares campus. The study is of qualitative nature and participant observations and a group interview were developed. From data analysis, it is possible to comprehend that the theme choice by the students can favor the preestablishment of hierarchically unequal relations among the students, thus distancing from the proposal of establishing democratic relations in the classroom.
