- Abstract
The study examines the internal regional trends in per capita GDP over the last three decades in the member states of the European Union starting from below-average levels of development. Experience has shown that the predictions of the so-called trade-off convergence theory have been realized in all countries, because the faster the catching-up of the national economy was, the greater the regional differences in income became between counties within the country. However, our regression analysis reveals that the relative standard deviation of the GDP per capita of counties does not increase above 50%, and even regional disparities begin to decrease again above a level of development. The study also uses regression analysis to examine the impact of the growth rate of total investments, the impact of the composition of investments, and the impact of the external economic openness of the country. According to international experience, the improvements in these macroeconomic indicators have not been able to stop the growth of regional income disparities, but it can also be clearly shown that they have had a greater impact on the catching-up of the national economies rather than regional income disparities. Thus, they can be considered positive macroeconomic processes.
