An essay is presented which discusses the short story "The Whole World Knows" by Eudora Welty, with focus given to its veiled depiction of ancient renewal rituals in a modern Southern U.S. town. More specifically, the author examines how a girl's suicide due to her being raped in the story relates to the ancient ritual of sacrificing a maiden to ensure a town's survival.
