- Abstract
The article discusses the successful market garden enterprise of J. C. Schmidt in Erfurt, Germany, as an example of the growth of horticultural centers in catering to broad consumers' demands for flowers and vegetables in various regions throughout Germany. "Blumenschmidt," ("Flower Smith") as the founder was called, pioneered horticultural marketing and supplied a variety of garden produce, nursery trees, and seeds, as well as numerous kinds of flowers. The company's eventual purchase following the economic depression begun in 1929 and the firm's subsequent history of growth are detailed.
