- Abstract
The manuscript we are going to publish is kept in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence (Ms. Magl. X. 65). As a matter of fact, it is composed of two distinct documents: the first contains data written by Magliabechi himself; the second is a kind of summary, in fair copy, of the previous one but it is not written by Magliabechi and includes a lot of errors. The first part looks like a letter maybe addressed to Lorenzo Panciatichi or someone else in Leopoldo's entourage. Most probably, these are notes used by Magliabechi to write the papers that periodically he sent to Cardinal Leopoldo in Rome. This document is related to the remarks that Magliabechi made to the Index Librorum Probibitorum edited by Father Vincenzo Fano (1670), where he pointed out all the mistakes made by the secretary of the Index Congregation. According to Magliabechi these errors were structural because what Father Fano considered the value of the publication was, in reality, the main source of the errors and misunderstandings that could arise while looking it up, starting from the criteria of indexing. In fact, an author could be found in the alphabetical order of his name, his surname or sometimes the title of the forbidden book.
