- Abstract
The paper deals with the way Jewish identity in the diaspora is depicted in the last three novels of Grigory Kanovich, winner of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts. These novels are "Žydų parkas" ("The Jewish Park"), published 1997 in Russian and 1998 in Lithuanian; "Šėtono apžavai" ("The Devil's Spell"), published 2002 in Russian and in Lithuanian; and "Miestelio romansas" ("Shtetl Love Song"), published 2013 in Russian and in Lithuanian. These novels reflect the fate of the Lithuanian Jews' diaspora in the 20th century and the change of Jewish consciousness in the face of the Holocaust. Talking about the Jews pictured in the novels, it is important to look at the concept of diaspora in the thought of Howard Wettstein and Carl D. Evans, Benedict Anderson's theory of Imagined Communities as well as historical and cultural studies by Vilius Ivanauskas, Jurgita Šiaučiūnaitė-Virbickenė, Justas Stončius, Tomas Balkelis, and others. The life of the Jewish community and the change of the Jewish identity in Kanovich's prose are related to the abundance of the Jewish population, the places in which they dwell, and their relationship with the Lithuanians, who are changed by European totalitarian politics.
