- Abstract
Another Study by Li et al.32 showed that acute endurance exercise preconditioning increased the autophagy levels in the myocardium and attenuated the ischemia-hypoxia injury in the rat ischemia-reperfusion injury model. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the major threats to human health and remain the leading causes of mortality worldwide. These results suggested that regular exercise protects arteries against atherosclerosis by stimulating endothelial cell autophagy via weakening the inflammatory response. Exercise could regulate autophagy bidirectionally: for CVDs caused by insufficient or hyperactive autophagy, it up-regulates or inhibits autophagy to restore regular autophagy function, and delay the progression of CVDs.
