A literary criticism of the 1880 novel "O Mandarim" by Portuguese author José Maria de Eça de Queirós is presented. The trials of the novel's protagonist, Teodoro, are seen as a commentary on the uncertainties facing the nation of Portugal in the 19th century as its status as a colonial power waned.
