- Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the interaction of two processes in Brazilian Portuguese: the ow- monophthongization and l-vocalization. These processes produce counterfeeding opacity. This opacity cannot be handled for Optimality Theory. For that reason, several proposals have been presented. Among these, the Stratal Optimality Theory of Itô and Mester (2001, 2003b) advocates the minimal distinction between lexicon and postlexicon levels. Effects of counterfeeding opacity as the existent in Portuguese are explained by the interaction of these modules. This opacity can be seized through the possibility of different rankings among levels.
