- Abstract
This article aims to analyze how the face self-protection operators work in the argumentative dimension of the texts. To do this, we start from the multifunctionality inherent in macrostructural units and the need to incorporate the interrelational dimension into their description, and we sketch a taxonomy of discursive operators based on the social (im)politeness effect generated. In this sense, we differentiate between operators that promote mitigating politeness, operators that promote face-flattering politeness, affiliation's operators and face self-protection operators. After its definition and characterization, the work focuses on the analysis of the argumentative performance of this last subtype, identifying the similarities and differences between them. As a conclusion, we verify the argumentative value of the face self-protection operators as elements of strength and enhancement of the illocutionary force of the statement and we demonstrate how their use is due to the desire to safeguard the speaker's face. From a more general perspective, the relationship between argumentation and verbal (im)politeness is verified, as well as the need to incorporate the social value generated into the description of supra-sentence units.
