- Title
The Native American Canoe-wright and Mariner.
- Authors
Norton, Louis Arthur
- Abstract
The article details the history of canoes used by Indians of North America, focusing particularly on the eastern coastal tribes ranging from New England into Canada. Since Indians lacked a written language, sources related to the history of canoes are based on oral histories as well as written accounts of travelers and colonists. Topics considered include the religious beliefs of Indians and how such ideas influenced the designs of their boats, 17th-century accounts of canoes written by explorers Samuel de Champlain and George Weymouth, and differences in the design and construction between bark canoes, dugouts, and kayaks.
