- Abstract
As there are few reports of fasting by caregivers,1,2 we conducted an audit to determine the prevalence and reasons of fasting among the caregivers of children scheduled for elective surgery. The parental fasting did not differ with father's ( I p i = .575) or mother's education ( I p i = .813), family income ( I p i = .188), and the source of fasting instructions ( I p i = .311). Preoperative fasting guidelines aim to allow sufficient time for gastric emptying with minimum patient discomfort.
