- Title
Katrina Lessons Learned: Lone Star rhetoric in response to Hurricane Ike.
- Authors
Pacheco, Jr., George; Boone, Jeff G.
- Abstract
This article examines the official messages released and the news reporting prior to the arrivals of both Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in 2008 to compare how they affected responses to two storms that were similar in size. Hurricane Katrina resulted in over 1000 more deaths than Ike. A comparison shows that warnings for Ike were much more ominous and foretold of dire consequences. Bitzer's situational model was used to do a rhetorical analysis of the statement and news reporting.
