- Abstract
In a time of doom and gloom with respect to the prospects of democracy worldwide, David Altman's new book, I Citizenship and Contemporary Direct Democracy i , offers an optimistic proposal to " I democratize i democracy" through the adoption and use of citizen-initiated mechanisms of direct democracy (CI-MDDs). While all mechanisms of direct democracy (MDDs) allow citizens to vote on specific issues in a secret ballot, Altman differentiates these mechanisms according to two key aspects: first, how and by whom they are initiated and, second, whether they are designed to alter the status quo or to prevent change. For example, whereas Altman finds that TD-MDDs are more likely to succeed in less democratic contexts, when electoral participation is lower, and during the government's honeymoon phase, he finds the opposite to be true for the likelihood of CI-MDD success.
