- Authors
Arvidsson, Alf
- Abstract
This article examines early jazz journalism with a particular focus upon Spike Hughes's work for the British publication Melody Maker in the early 1930s. The article uses archival research and detailed analysis of Hughes's work to uncover important trends within the discursive practices surrounding jazz in the period under discussion. In particular, it traces the critical mapping of art discourses onto jazz, arguing for the centrality of the critic within jazz as an 'art world'.
