VERTICAL INTEGRATION, HORIZONTAL REGULATION:. THE GROWTH OF RUPERT MURDOCH'S US MEDIA EMPIRE.
- Authors
Gomery, Douglas
- Abstract
The article discusses the plans of Rupert Murdoch to set up a fourth television (TV) station to rival the three major U.S. TV stations ABC, NBC and CBS. According to the article, Mr. Mudoch first bought half of Hollywood's Twentieth Century Fox from oilman Marvin Davis, then seven independent TV stations. Through vertical integration, the article says, Murdoch eventually owned all of Twentieth Century including program production, distribution and eventual showing of television programs. U.S. President Ronald Reagan and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) helped encourage Mr. Murdoch through the project.
