- Abstract
The article discusses the origins of classical Greek philosophical ethics and notions of the good life in Delphic literary and religious practice. It first traces the development of the image and worship of the Greek god Apollo, as well as of the concept of hubris. It then provides an analysis of the Delphic notions of self-knowledge and virtue (sophrosyne) and how these were transformed from religious and literary concepts to a core element of classical Greek philosophy, focusing in particular on the notion of mortality.
