- Title
Funding cut for US nuclear waste dump.
- Authors
Mascarelli, Amanda Leigh
- Abstract
The article discusses the proposed long-term nuclear-waste repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada and associated political and funding developments. The proposed U.S. budget for 2009 would suspend funds for further research of the site, but allocate funds to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for reviewing the license application filed for the site in June 2008. The article discusses the economics of continuing to store radioactive wastes at nuclear plants around the country, prospects for finding an alternative geologic-waste repository, and repository-siting progress in other countries.
