- Title
Evolutionary genomics: A positive becomes a negative.
- Authors
Hurst, Laurence D.
- Abstract
The article discusses research conducted on hotspot genes for positive selection that are discovered via genome scans of DNA sequences. Contrary to the historical assumption of a connection between fast evolution and pervasive positive selection, this study finds that hotspots have likely accelerated evolution by means of a biased DNA repair process, not because the changes were beneficial. Human genes were compared with the genes of chimpanzees and other primates to infer human-specific changes.
