Car industry: Charging up the future.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses how escalating oil prices and issues associated with global climate change are leading automobile manufacturers to embrace the concept of plug-in electric cars. Price concerns have led to customers purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles, and producing cars run off of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries will allow more money to remain in the U.S. national economy as opposed to being spent on imported petroleum products. This retained money could be used to bolster domestic generation of renewable energy. The science behind lithium-ion batteries is examined, and the new hybrid automobile design of the Chevrolet Volt is discussed. Quotes are provided from Mark Duvall of the Electric Power Research Institute.
