Following the discovery of the planet by the scientist Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, the search for Pluto's satellite was the first task to be done by scientists. The discovery of Charon, Pluto's largest satellite, had prompted a fresh look at Hubble images which was taken to map the surface of the planet.
