- Abstract
Five species of Salvia harvested from Oltenia region flora, Romania, were analysed for polyphenolic and flavonoid content and radical scavenging activity using UHPLC/MS, Folin-Ciocâlteu, and AlCl3 spectrophotometric methods, respectively, DPPH and ABTS assays. UHPLC profiling revealed the presence of two polyphenolic carboxylic acids (rosmarinic and caffeic) and two flavonoids (luteolin and isoquercitrin) in all Salvia extracts. Rosmarinic acid was found in the highest amount in all samples. The methanolic extract of S. nemorosa proved to have the best radical scavenging activity in the DPPH test, while S. verticillata had the smallest IC50 in the ABTS assay. This study revealed data regarding the phytochemical profiles of these five Salvia spp. in relation to their antioxidant properties evaluated through radical scavenging activity.
