- Abstract
Water participates in all metabolic processes. Water is the major constituent of animal tissues and principal component of animal rations. Water comprises about 80% body weight in newborn foals and 60 to 70% body weight in adult horses. Water deprivation in horses leads fast to weight loss. Horses prefer to drink from an open water surfaces. Several factors influence drinking water requirement in horses, especially physical activity, physiological status, ambient temperature, solar insolation, access to pasture and fresh grass, feed intake, feed components, diet chemical composition and electrolyte intake. The aim of this paper was to present the broad aspects connected with drinking water in equine nutrition.
