- Abstract
The article is a review of the book "Gender and Number Agreement in Arabic" by Simone Bettega and Luca D'Anna. The book explores the rule of feminine singular agreement with non-human masculine plural controllers in Modern Arabic syntax. It addresses questions about the distribution and historical origins of this agreement pattern, as well as the synchronic variation across spoken dialects and diachronic language change in written Arabic sources. The authors analyze corpus data and frequency distributions to identify ongoing tendencies and propose a typological-functional explanation for the emergence of feminine singular agreement. The book provides a comprehensive overview of agreement patterns in Arabic, covering written Arabic, dialects, and diachronic perspectives. It contributes to both Arabic linguistics and theoretical linguistics by offering original insights into the functioning and evolution of agreement patterns in world languages.
