- Abstract
This article discusses Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych's book, "The Cooing of the Dove and the Cawing of the Crow," which focuses on the late ʿAbbāsid poet Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī and his major diwans, Saqṭ al-Zand and Luzūm Mā Lā Yalzam. The book examines al-Maʿarrī's evolution as a poet, analyzing his poems using a performance-based reading for his youth and a stylistics-based method for his maturity. The book provides valuable insights into al-Maʿarrī's use of traditional literary conventions and his innovative approach to poetry. The author of this text praises the approach of a certain individual in the field of global literary studies, describing it as fresh and innovative, offering new perspectives for analyzing not only Arabic poetry but also non-Western comparative literature.
