- Abstract
For unwanted, potentially harmful substances in plant materials used in the manufacture of medicines or foodstuffs, the legislation as well as health authorities have set maximum limits in order to guarantee consumer protection and patients’ safety. In the following, some current regulations and recommendations on pesticide residues, heavy metals/elements, pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitrosamines as potential contaminants as well as on estragole as plant constituent will be presented and evaluated in terms of practical relevance for cultivation and the processing industry. A close co-operation between both these areas can contribute to the minimization of contaminants in the first stages of the manufacturing process as well as in the subsequent processing steps. When limit values or other rules are open for consultation, contributions of cultivators and industry are possible; they should be backed up with data collected in practice and, if necessary, toxicological arguments.
