The article discusses the importance to firms of approaching investments in information technology (IT)from a strategic perspective. For most firms IT is a tactical adjunct that makes more efficient an existing process. Strategic IT re-engineers the corporation by making possible newer, more effective processes. Computer networking technology, by giving executives a view of the firm that transcends separate business functions, can be a significant strategic investment.
