- Abstract
In this scenery of demographic transition characterized by the elderly population increase, it is possible to correlate the population aging to the increase of chronic diseases and the consequent increase of prescriptions. Researching the elderly adhesion to medication is particularly important due to fragilities that this population group tends to present. The present study aimed to verify the adhesion to pharmacological treatment of individuals who are 60 or over 60 years old and investigate the relation between adhesion and socio-demographic aspects, health self-perception, assistance and prescription. This is a descriptive, transversal and quantitative study, accomplished at the Third Age Movement (MOTI) in the city of Ipatinga – MG, Brazil. 69 elderly people, selected by convenience, took part in the research. They responded to data collection tools, such as the Morisky and Green Test. The association between the low referred adhesion and possible difficulties to accomplish the proposed treatment was analysed. The prevalence of nonadhesion was 76,8% with p<0,05. It is important that profissionals of the health field recognize the prevalence of non-adhesion to medication and identify factors that act as bareers for the treatment, aiming to improve health planning and possible interventions that foment the therapeutic success.
