- Abstract
The diversity of endophytic fungi from Ulva lactuca has been reported in a subtropical area. However, it has never been described in Malaysia. Thus, this research was conducted to determine the diversity of endophytic fungi isolated from U. lactuca collected from rocky and mangrove habitat at Johor coastal area namely Pengerang and Nusajaya. Overall, 23 distinct fungal endophytes were successfully isolated from 741 number of segments and mostly were Ascomycota. Total of fungal endophytes were recorded high in rocky habitat (18 species) with high species richness value (2.33) compared to mangrove habitat (seven species) with low species richness value (1.72). Genus Aspergillus was recorded as the dominant for both collected locations while rare species was Penicillium roqueforti. Moreover, nine fungi were documented to be specifically found on Ulva lactuca at rocky habitat, namely Aspergillus nidulans, A. terreus, Fusarium semitectum, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. expansum, P. roqueforti, P. rubens, Rhizopus sp. and Paecilomyces lilacinus. In the mangrove habitat, only one species was recorded i.e. Aspergillus fumigatus. This research has proven the capability of Ulva lactuca to provide condusive habitat for diverse fungal endophytes.
