- Title
A Future Path of RBMS: A Bookseller's Point of View.
- Authors
Rootenberg, Howard
- Abstract
The author reflects on the future of the Rare Book and Manuscript Section (RBMS) of the American Library Association (ALA). RBMS was created to promote understanding of the value of rare books to scholarly research and to cultural growth. Particular focus is given to the role of the bookseller in the RBMS context. The author emphasizes that the role of bookseller is to know collections and the market. He believes the community has overcome the notion that booksellers are out to pressure libraries for money. He points out that the future of RBMS is tied to the future of bookselling. He also notes that bookselling calls for imagination and courage and that booksellers need to be trained in ways of thinking of librarians.
