- Abstract
This contribution re-examines the figure of Giacomo Del Maino, whom documents and literature identify as the main wood sculptor of Sforza Lombardy, but whose catalog has remained thin and of modest quality. The recent discovery of new documents - in particular those that allow to significantly move backwards the date of the Bellano's Compianto from around 1515 to 1493-1494 - alongside the recent discovery of unpublished works, provides the opportunity for reviewing Del Maino's position within the Lombard art of the last quarter of the fifteenth century and reclaiming his full dignity. The dynamics of the Del Maino workshop are now clearer and the generational transition between Giacomo and his sons, Giovan Angelo and Tiburzio Del Maino, is more understandable. In light of these discoveries, and through a philological verification, we can firmly attribute to the Del Mainos the execution of the high altar of Santa Maria del Monte above Varese - a crucial work for Lombard art of the fifteenth century - and presume Giovan Angelo's early participation in it.
