- Abstract
Even if Vincenzo Scamozzi had already identified Genoa, together with Rome, as a city in which galleries can be best developed, it is however between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth century that these locations increasingly acquire their own peculiarity, especially in relation with the decorative system. We wanted to prove, through a systematic analysis of these artefacts, that galleries in Genoa were rarely conceived as a space dedicated only to the exhibition of paintings. In fact, galleries assume more often the function of a real fluid architectural form, where the object of the collection can be set in the background until it almost disappears completely. The walls, structured by the lines of strength of the architectural grid, gets 'false' paintings and 'false' sculptural monochrome furnishings that - alongside the physical presence of some, selected, objects that change according to taste and fashion - allows to harmonise and join the space/surface of the wall with that one of the vault.
