This paper examines the effects of an import tariff on employment under flexible exchange rates, stressing the role of factor markets. In the model, consumers choose between the domestically produced good and a foreign tariff charged good; producers choose between domestic labour and a foreign intermediate good as factors of production. In most cases the protective trade policy results in lower employment.
