- Abstract
The article "Didactics: NMR Spectroscopy in Teacher Training" presents the use of 60 MHz benchtop devices for biotechnical experiments instead of using expensive 400 MHz NMR spectrometers. These devices can be used for tracking processes such as alcoholic fermentation or the analysis of beverages. It explains how NMR spectroscopy can be used to determine alcohol content in spirits and how concentrations of methanol and ethanol in fruit brandies can be determined using low-field NMR technology. It also shows how the 1-octanol-water distribution coefficient can be determined using NMR spectroscopy to investigate the hydrophilicity of organic compounds. The experiments are easy to perform and illustrate the relationship between structure and property.
