- Abstract
Lamia Karim's book, "Castoffs of Capital: Work and Love among Garment Workers in Bangladesh," challenges the prevailing stereotype of garment assembly line workers as young, female, and victimized. Through ethnographic and life history research, Karim provides a nuanced portrayal of the aspirations and realities of low-wage factory workers in Bangladesh. The book explores how class, gender, and age shape workers' ability to create meaningful lives. It also examines the impact of globalization on the garment industry and the experiences of older workers who have "aged out" of the industry. Karim's work highlights the importance of space, time, and intergenerational analysis in understanding the lives of garment workers and calls for a serious consideration of their experiences in efforts to improve working conditions.
