The Ongoing Revolution in Benefits Administration: The Forces of Change Unleashed.

- Abstract
This article describes the ongoing changes in the area of employee benefits administration. One of the most significant developments in employee benefits administration is the shift from a paternalistic employers' attitude toward benefit plan design to an approach in which employees are encouraged to assume responsibility for making plan choices, as in flex plans and defined contribution pension plans. This shift has required benefits administrators to choose a more communication-based focus. Interactive communication technologies are rapidly being developed to assist in this communication process. These technologies include telephone response systems, standard computer programs for individual employee use, interactive multimedia kiosks, relational databases to eliminate redundant data collection and special software applications for employee case tracking. When integrated, these technologies offer the structure for event-driven benefits to be put into place and utilized.
