An essay is presented on the portrayal of the Plimsoll man in novel "The Nigger of the Narcissus: A Tale of the Sea" by Joseph Conrad. Topics include Conrad's description of how the Plimsoll man prevented an allegedly unsafe ship from sailing, Conrad's mockery of the Plimsoll man, and the embodiment of a collective and coherent social world that contains the potential opening of the solidarity experience and the representation of a society that is fragmented by individualism.
